Two codes, chosen by currency
Bank of America gives two codes for incoming wires. The choice depends on the currency the sender pays in, not on where you live or which branch opened your account (Bank of America).
| The sender pays in | SWIFT/BIC | Bank address to give |
|---|---|---|
| US dollars, or you do not know the currency | BOFAUS3N | Bank of America, N.A., 222 Broadway, New York, NY 10038 |
| A foreign currency (euros, pounds, pesos…) | BOFAUS6S | Bank of America, N.A., 555 California St., San Francisco, CA 94104 |
Each code comes with its own address. Keep the code and address together. A form that pairs BOFAUS6S with the New York address mixes up the two sets of instructions.
Which one is safer if you are unsure?
Bank of America's own wording sends wires "in U.S. dollars or unknown currency" to BOFAUS3N. When you cannot find out what the sender's bank will do, that is the code the bank points to. Bank of America's April 2026 wire guide repeats the same split (Bank of America guide, PDF).
Receiving in a foreign currency
Bank of America's wire page says that when it converts a payment, it may include a markup in the rate (Bank of America). The rate applied can therefore differ from the one quoted in the news. If the exact amount matters, agree with the sender who does the conversion before the money leaves.
Domestic wires use a different number
For a wire from inside the US, the sender needs your account number and the wires routing number 026009593. Bank of America warns that some banks use different routing numbers for wires and for ACH transfers (Bank of America). The number printed on your cheques is therefore not always the right one for a wire. See SWIFT code vs routing number.
Time and cost
| Point | What Bank of America says |
|---|---|
| Domestic wire credited | Typically the same business day |
| International wire credited | Typically in 1 to 2 business days |
| Fee to receive | "may incur a $15 fee per wire", per the personal or business fee schedule |
| Family accounts | On SafeBalance for Family Banking, the parent owner can send and receive wires, the child cannot |

Finding your account number
In the mobile app: Accounts, pick the account, then "Account & Routing #". In Online Banking: open the account, the Information & Services tab, then "Show full account number" (Bank of America). Copy it from there, not from an old email or a photo of a cheque.
Check both codes here
Both codes pass the format checker: eight letters and digits in the right places, so they are taken as the primary office. The checker cannot tell you which of the two fits your payment; the table above does. Other banks are on the US bank codes page.
